I am a photographer living in Edwardsville, Illinois and most of the images you see on this website were shot in Edwardsville or within a ten to twenty mile radius of it. Although there are images from points beyond, I usually have no problem finding interesting things to look at and photograph close to home. I know there is a saying that familiarity breeds contempt but I have found that, for me, it breeds comfort. Although I am very much a local photographer, I do take my camera with me almost everywhere and enjoy, when I am in a new place, observing what's around me and taking pictures.
As you’ll notice, the majority of photographs in my galleries are square. Although my camera does not record the images in this format, I have discovered over the last couple of years that I naturally tend to “see” this way. When I look at things I usually notice smaller details rather than the big picture, so I find it pretty easy to crop to square in most instances. I also feel that it creates a pleasing cohesiveness and a sense of harmony to individual and groups of images.
